Patient memo

Patient memo

Before seeing a healthcare professional, it is good to know that the time available for a patient's visit is limited. To avoid being rushed, we advise you to think about your questions at home beforehand and write them down.

1. Prepare for your visit by thinking about what you want during your visit:
  • Talk about a health problem;
  • Get a prescription for your medicines or change your medicines;
  • Get an appointment for tests;
  • Talk about the planned surgery and any other tests and specialist advice that may be needed.

2. If you suspect you have a disease, it is important to keep a note of the circumstances and symptoms: this can help you spot problems and prioritise treatment.

3. When you visit your doctor, ask the questions you have prepared, starting with the most important ones. If you don't understand the answer, ask the same question again and ask the doctor to explain. Be sure to tell the doctor if you have any doubts that you will be able to follow his instructions.

4. Once treatment has been offered, ask if there are any other options. When your doctor prescribes medication, ask how to take it and if there are any side effects, and if you have had any reactions to the medication.

5. After a visit to the doctor, always follow the doctor's instructions and take the tests and specialist consultations that have been prescribed.

6. Contact your doctor again if you:
  • Your health has deteriorated;
  • You have experienced side effects or other problems with your medication;
  • You have started taking over-the-counter medicines;
  • You want to know the results of the tests you have had and your doctor's instructions on the results of such tests.
